Kirill Kabanov is gonna turn a lot of heads this season.

IF we ever have an NHL season... he will get a few looks with the big club.

It's nice to hear kabanov is maturing. His off ice maturation is essential for his on ice growth.

I've been talking him up since camp last year, so if he flops, there goes my career as NHL scout...or at least know-it-all fan.

I mean he's got good passing ability but I'm not sure his shot is that great. More importantly is his play in his own end which seems to be a problem with most Russian players. I'm not going to argue with anyone who likes him cause I hope he works out (isles can first). But, I think he's a bust......again just my opinion. Petrov to me has more NHL ability...

No worries I'm sure the Isles would still hire you as a scout. You have the two biggest qualities they look for. You're cheap and Inexperienced. Welcome to management.

I don't think she meant it as a knock on CT or the AHL. I think she was referring to the lockout. Either way I'm going to the bport home opener. Should be great hockey over there this year.

Just curious how many times have you seen each player play? Not youtube or any other 2 minute video clips.

Kabby was praised for his 2 way play and hustle and effort while posting above a ppg on a championship team last year

I'm pretty sure kabbys biggest weakness is shot then weight
Everything else I hear from scouts is average to great

Last years camp showed Petrov skating better than anyone on the ice, and his ability to go to the net was NHL esq. Kabanov is a stickhandler and again just my opinion, but i dont think thats working in the NHL. Time will tell...

Hopefully he plays a consistent two way game. When I watched him play in the rookie game a few weeks back, he didnt stand out. To me, guys like Nino, Strome, and Kabanov should stand out in those games.

I just feel like if you're gonna use a short stick and play a stickhandle game, you gotta have above average speed and above average shot. I dont think he has either.........he just doesn't stand out to me. Its not that I dont want him to work out, I just feel like we have the wrong Russian at camp from our draft picks.

A lot of people around the league are very high on him. Nobody is ever sure how these kids turn out. Like you said, time will tell.

2. Kirill Kabanov, Left Wing
2010-11 Ranking: 2nd
Date of birth: 07/16/1992
Age: 20
Height: 6'2''
Weight: 199
Shoots: Right
Statistics: 50 GP, 21 G, 55 P (Shawinigan-QMJHL)
Acquired: Third round, 65th overall in 2010 by New York Islanders

The Good: Kabanov is a high-end puck possession player who NHL scouts praise for his "tremendous hockey sense on and off the puck." One scout said on him "He's got great vision with the puck, but he's always around the play because he senses so well without it and always knows where the puck will be." Kabanov has plus puck skills and can really dangle defensemen. He's an above-average skater who can generate good power from his stride. The interesting thing about Kabanov was the praise I heard this year for his all-around game. One scout said, "He's very competitive on and off the puck, and plays a good team game. He's been solid defensively." I don't buy the character issues with him that are widely discussed, and everything I've heard from scouts this year points to him having good on-ice work ethic and getting his off-ice work done. I've written about how I feel those issues were overrated, and NHL sources I talked to this year echoed that.

The Bad: Kabanov still needs to get stronger, but scouts have mentioned that he is growing well into his frame, with one saying "he could get to 215 pounds in about a year." Considering his talent level, even though Shawinigan spread out ice time, his production has continued to be a concern especially for a 19-year-old player in the QMJHL.

Projection: He has all the tools to be a first-line winger although at some point he needs to really start lighting up the scoreboard.

He's a good puck distributor. If he develops that skill further, he'd be a good addition, I think. I just remember in the rookie games and in preseason, he made a lot of passes that looked like he was just blindly and randomly flinging the puck somewhere, but they all ended up on the tape of a teammate...to the point where I stopped believing it was just dumb luck and started thinking maybe the guy has pretty good vision and hockey sense. He's got some speed too, so if he can carry the puck, then pass at the right time to the right player...now we're talking. Not sure how he'll be when the physical play picks up though, but Boston's rookie squad had quite a few AHLers who were further along than the Isles junior-heavy squad, and Kabanov looked good against them. The downside was how thin he looked and that he played with the puck at the blue line a bit too much, but the latter can be coached out of him hopefully.

I understand your view.. Petrov has a more well rounded game, But Kab can skate with the puck, he can pass like no one I have seen in a long while & his on ice vision is tremendous. So yes lets say both players do make it to the NHL.. I dont see Kab being the out of your seat goal scorer that Petrov would be. But who would be disappointed if Kab was the one setting him up?
